Review Summits
A ministerial review summit held on 12 September 2008 reflected on progress in implementing the Geneva Declaration and provided guidance to enhance programming on the ground.
The review summit offered a forum of discussion on how to strengthen the relations between the security and development communities through practical measures and reviewing cutting-edge practices at the international, regional, and national levels.
The summit helped build political support for a UN General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution entitled ‘Promoting Development through the Reduction and Prevention of Armed Violence’ (A/RES/63/23). The Summit Statement reaffirmed that armed violence is a major impediment to sustainable development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, and that efforts aimed at preventing and reducing the negative impact of armed violence on development through practical measures will have to be continued and intensified.
At the ministerial review summit 2008 delegates agreed to reconvene for a review conference no later than 2011.
