General Assembly Adopts Resolution on Armed Violence and Development

On 17 November 2008, the Resolution "Promoting Development through the Reduction and Prevention of Armed Violence" was adopted in the plenary session of the United Nations General Assembly by consensus under the agenda item "Follow-up to the outcome of the Millennium Summit". The Resolution calls on the Secretary General to seek the views of the member states on the interrelation between armed violence and development and to report back to the General Assembly at its 64th session in 2009. The resolution was introduced by Switzerland and sponsored by 56 states.
